Hump Day

I'm cranky today. Haven't got much sleep in the last 5 days because of my shoulder. It took an act of congress to get some pain meds and just got them yesterday. I finally got 8 hours of sleep last night.

#1 Hump all the dope-head em-effers that made it difficult for the rest of the world to get legitimate help. I hope your selfish highs were worth it. I'll never know.

#2 Hump mortgage lenders for making it damn near impossible for the blue collar class of people to qualify for a home loan. Especially the big bastards those same people helped bail out.

#3 Hump Apple for putting out new products like the new Magic Mouse with the new iMac. You bastards know I'm broke yet you tempt me with the new technological play pretties.

#4 Hump CSI the TV show. I get tired of you being on my TV 70% of the time the TV is on. Someone dies and you find the killer. WOW! I just predicted your next episode. Crystal LOVES that damned show.

#5 Hump the sorry bastards dumping decapitated deer carcases beside my house. You could donate the deer meat to the homeless. My kids play in your so called deer dumpin' grounds.

#6 Hump animal rescue places for charging a "$300 Donation" to adopt a friggin dog. I want to rescue one for the family not pay AKC registered prices. I've seen AKC labs for $200. Even though a lab would be WAY too big. Don't get me wrong, I understand there are fees associated with spaying and neutering along with worming and other meds but DAMN. $300 for a mutt. I love mutts. They typically aren't inbred like most purebreds. Most of the time they are smarter and just all around better dogs.

except for the Apple stuff (cause I'm a PC gal) I agree with you on all of this! Hate CSI and everyone else you mentioned today. Damn and I was in a good mood too.

Screw the PT - get the surgery. I've lived it. It will be better after the surgery....well in a month or so anyway. They had me do that dance you're doing now too and it just prolonged the inevitable.
Only difference is they gave me a lot of percocets. It didn't stop the pain but it sure took the edge off. And from the sounds of your day you could use some. Wish I could share. .

Sorry you are cranky. Eat some chocolate, or better yet, ice cream! Those always make me a bit less cranky :)

May I suggest my local animal shelter?

http://www.tupeloleehumane.org/

I think we are about an hour or so south of y'all. Adoption fees are $75 - includes spay/neuter, 1st set of shots, de-worming, micro-chipping, and rabies tag or rabies voucher.

I volunteer for them regularly and was actually in this past Saturday - Zeus was a VERY cool dog. http://www.petango.com/Adopt/Dog-Retriever-Labrador-8588729 I hope he gets a good home. (We have multiple pets and are at max capacity so we can't take him)

Anyway, If they are spay/neutered already most of the time they can go home with you the same day - if not you can contact them and let them know you would like to adopt one and they can get it's surgery done and you can come pick it up after that(that way you only have to drive down once).

Hope this info helps! :)

If they aren't sure if there is a rotator cuff injury....I suggest you look into something called Thoracic Outlet Syndrome

What you are describing is exactly what I went through for 6 years and it took a physiotherapist fresh out of school to pick it up.

Humane societies, as have already been suggested, are usually more affordable. However, when you're looking at a private rescue, $300 isn't a huge sum. Not only are the animals UTD and spayed/neutered, but also keep in mind that most private rescues are foster-based, so you have a house broken, crate trained animal, with a known character and personality, and usually basic commands as well. Also, private rescues are typically funded almost solely by adoption fees, as they don't have associated funding like HS and county pounds, or the manpower to write grants all day, as their staff is 100% volunteer. I understand your initial shock, but for a family with kids, adopting through a private rescue for $300 is worth it for a dog you KNOW has been PROVEN kid-safe... Plus adoption fees are tax-deductible. :) With the rescue I work for, we always said if he adoption fee was too high, you aren't ready for a dog - what if emergency surgery is required, or regular medication? Inevitably the dog would be returned due to financial contraints, and that is what NOBODY wants. Sorry, I'll hop off my soapbox now - I am just very passionate about this after 5+ years with a private rescue!

Try www.petfinder.com and look up your state and type of dog you're interested in. We adopted Lucky Lady 4 years ago from an couple who rescued her and advertised on Petfinder. We didn't pay a damn cent for her, just the gas to go pick her up. I'm with ya on the outrageous fees some shelters charge. With so many animals in need of a good home, why not worry about where you place them, not how much you place them for? Be patient, the right doggie will come along eventually.

Go to Craigslist.com and look under "Pets" or "For Sale - Free" categories. There are a lot of people just trying to find a good home for their pet, without going to the rescue first.

Totally agree on #6 - $300 is too high. Reasonable spay / neuter / adoption fees - no prob.

Mutts are much better dogs, too. Owned them both; loved them both; cried like a baby when both passed.

Hope you can find a local shelter with one that suits your family!

Unbeknown to my poor wife, I have my eye on this one:

I agree with Laura R that if you can't afford $300 for a dog you can't afford a dog. Heartworm and tick/flea preventative, annual shots and good quality food are going to cost you twice that per year. And what if the dog needs emergency care?

The rescues usually have spent more than that to get the dog healthy. If they didn't recoup some of their costs they couldn't afford to help more dogs.

I was saying that to be forced to pay $300 for a dog isn't exactly what one thinks of when they opt to "RESCUE" an animal. That is comparable to AKC and CKC registered prices. I'm cheap and it seems a little fishy when one place charges $60 for a dogs with all shots, wormed, and fixed. That's $60 for all their dogs where as the other place charges $300 for all their dogs. You do the math because it doesn't add up to me. I was figured $60 was a deal but $300?

Unfortunately you have wandered into hot topic territory. I get where you are coming from and I hope my comment didn't start this.

I will say this both shelters and rescue groups have one common goal "to save lives and create families" at the end of the day that is what is most important - not if one is better than the other. I really would like to make some more comments on this but I will refrain for the sake of not causing more "stink".

You are OK by me beagle. What would the world be like without opinions? I can only give mine to the world and it my not be liked, but it's still mine.

You make a good point. Thanks for sharing your opinion. I love ya the same. :)

A big reason behind the fee difference is that county/city shelters are funded by tax dollars, whereas rescue groups depend on donations and money out of the fosters' pockets. Even with steep discounts many vets give them, the cost per animal adds up fast.

I tend to go to pounds simply because I want to pull an animal from death row. Just last month I literally pulled a dog off the euthanasia table. The local rescues were full and had no space for her. By that same token, I've also spent over $300 at the vet's office to get her well from distemper. At pounds, they HAVE to take in whatever is thrown at them, healthy and sick. They are often mixed together because of lack of space or simply not realizing an animal is sick. So animal who came in healthy may leave sick.

Sorry I'm late on replying to this, but PLEASE adopt a dog. Don't buy. That is my message to everyone.

My mother BOUGHT (to my everlasting shame) a dog and it is the dumbest dog I have every seen. (Not that I don't care about him, he is a DOG and I love ALL DOGS, but.....)

We had a "mutt" named Lady when I was a teen and into my young adulthhod. That dog saved my life. I don't mean that in some cosmic "I was depressed and she made me happy" kind of way, I mean that literally. Seriously. She kept me from getting kicked in the head from my father. I was cowering on the bed and she TOOK the kicking (while biting the shit out of HIM I might add). She was SMART, and protective and the best dog in the world. I have a dog now that I love beyond reason, but Lady was even better than her when it comes to instinct, intelligence, etc. etc. There will NEVER be another dog like our Lady. NEVER.

So PLEASE, PLEASE I'm begging you. ADOPT.

I have to work on Halloween or I was going to give out "Adopt, Don't Buy" posters with the candy to the kiddos and their parents. Still thinking of taking some to the hospital where I work and giving them out. I am very passionate about that.

Again, sorry to be coming late to the party. But that is just me.

Oh! Since Oct. is almost over, and it IS National Domestic Abuse Month (it gets overshadowed by the PINK stuff), will you maybe give a link to either my post of the "Dear Abby's Signs of an Abuser" list, or list them yourself? PLEASE. You can copy and paste right off my blog. http://itsmyblog-thatswhy.blogspot.com or do a linkie to it. Consider it a personal favor and I will owe you one:o)

I am passionate about that too. Obviously.

lol

you cannot be serious! you want another dog? didn't you and the little woman already get rid of two dogs this year?

surely you are at your limit!

oh and the reason the costs are so high? it's to keep people from picking out a cute and cuddly toy and then disposing of it when the going gets rough.

hmmmmmmm now, who does that sound like??
