Ambien Story

Here is another installment in the Ambien series. If you have been affected or know know someone that has done something crazy on this stuff and don't mind sharing, Let me know.

My sister mixed her Ambien with Methamphetamine to help her come down from her days of being awake. When she ran out of Meth, she downed a few Ambien, except she didn't remember how many she had taken and she would often overdose. But even without the overdose the days on Ambien were HELL. A scary nightmare that I didn't think would ever have a happy ending. I knew my Sister was going to die if we didn't find help for her. The problem is - the doctors and the addict - They contradict each other. My sister had to WANT help and the doctors had to understand the situation. We were not allowed to talk to the doctors (patient confidentiality) and my sister was not about to tell them about her addiction. Not the truth anyway. She would tell the doctors that she was hearing voices, seeing things, having trouble sleeping etc. And in turn the doctor would dish out more drugs and her primary care doctor would dish out some more on her first follow up after leaving Psych. Then she was back in the same living situation she left with all the access to Meth that she could ever ask for. Lets just say we had to remove the source of the drugs to make sure my sister was safe. This took a nice little beating to someones face and a warning that he would not see the outside of a prison anytime soon if he ever gave my sister another form of any drug, legal or not, for the rest of his living days.Long story short, I almost lost my only sister and she almost lost her mind. She was slowing killing herself and brain cells. My sister is forever changed mentally and my family is forever changed emotionally. I am glad that my sister is alive but she will never be the person she could have been.

Mixing it with Meth can lead to nothing good. I have been asked many time if I knew if crystal had already taken her Ambien. I think we have it down to a science now. Take it then really to go bed. Don't take it with just intentions on going to bed. Go! I was on it for 2 months. (not consecutively) I can remember company came over late that Saturday night just after i took one. I remember walking into the wall in the kitchen and feeling drunk but do not remember anything after that. I was told that I was fairly odd. Just zoned out... saying random stuff... and laughing. Apparently nobody was laughing but me. I asked "How is that any different than any other day? I always say stuff that is funny only to myself and laugh while everyone else just stares." Sounds like a good time. Too bad I don't remember it.

That is a sad story but I am not completely sure the role that Ambien played in it. Bascially the sister likely would have been the same with the Meth use regardless of the Ambiem ingestion. Glad she is doing better, anyway.

Ok, so I'm a nurse, and I get that Ambien has some nasty side effects, and can make people crazy. I sympathize with all the stories I've been reading here, Chris.

But plugging "Meth" into the story invalidates any point the person was trying to make about how Ambien makes you crazy.

It's like saying, "Ambien can kill you if you take it right before jumping off the edge of the Grand Canyon." Of course it will.

So is Ambien and Meth a bad combo? Of course it is. Here are some other equally bad combos:
Aspirin and Meth
Tylenol and Meth
Flintstones vitamins and Meth.
Air and Meth.

Dead horse is now beaten sufficiently.

Picky,

I get that. I hesitated posting this but the one thing that made it stand out is this: "she downed a few Ambien, except she didn't remember how many she had taken and she would often overdose."

It can make you forget. The few people I've known that were on meth really didn't have a problem remembering anything. I figured I'd catch some flak but it was important to the person that e-mailed it to me so it is important to me.

Additionally, it can be good to vent at times and I can relate to the meth problems to one of my past relationships. I just thought she was hyper most of the time. She took ambien periodically also to help her sleep.

I post things that strike a point with me. I don't blog for other people. (not unless I pick up some ad revenue or something then i might.)

The story doesn't have to be about how Ambien can make a person crazy. Crystal was on 4 meds at the time she went nutz. Ambien, I think, was an amplifier in her situation.

I think there are more Ambien "scary" stories out there than are told. Medications combined cause several side effects that are often not talked about or categorized.

When reading the original post that prompted the Ambien storyline, I never doubted for a single minute that Crystal didn't "think" she did drugged the dog, to later realize she didn't.

I am a terrible sleep walker, sleep talker and do not remember several events that happen during these episodes. I will talk on the phone while asleep and have no clue I have ever talked to someone. There are more instances, but I will save it.

As for the meth story, I appreciated that you shared that. I have a friend that I have been showing these posts to and she has finally realized she has a problem. She mixed a few things and is now seeing the light! Thank you!

Picky, well said! This story isn't really about Ambien. Meth makes you psychotic. Pscyhosis is a state of altered reality.

Picky - Your right - mixing anything with Meth is not a good combo. But even with Meth out of the picture my sister would have likely overdosed just as many times. She never overdosed on Meth (illegal drug). No. She overdosed on the drugs that the doctors prescribed her. My sister has been clean of Meth for a long time but the addiction to pills has been far worse for her to shake than Meth ever was. I am glad that she is off Meth for sure but even more so I am glad she no longer takes a drug that she can't remember taking. That would have taken her life way before the Meth ever did.
Of course that is my opinion - everyone has one. Until you live through it with someone you know and love I personally don't think your opinion matters that much. And that includes those with a medical certificate to hang on the wall. Patients are different when they are your family members and you are living with them every day.
Thanks for posting the information - Maybe it will help someone maybe not. Can't hurt.

Well said, Chris. It is YOUR blog, and if something strikes a chord, post it.

This story tells me that the problem is not only the Ambien, but in SOME cases, the people not being truthful with their doctors and it aggravating an already bad situation. OR in Crystal's case, taking 4 meds, one of them BEING Ambien was probably a bad decision on her doctor's part.

I have to take Klonopin to "shut my brain off" to sleep. When I try to sleep, I replay over and over and over whatever stressful event I have had that day, or something else that didn't actually happen, but might be bothering me. I will fall asleep just enough to think that I am doing said 'stressful thing' and have to keep waking myself up to tell myself that I am in bed and that everything is okay. It could be something at work that I am reliving over and over, or something in my personal life. So yeah, should I be mixing that with other stuff it would probably get me in trouble. As it is when I wake in the middle of the night, I stumble around like a drunk person, but thank God I remember things and don't do anything weird. And it only has a brief period where I feel sleepy, enough to get to sleep without the "stressful film" playing in my head, and then in the morning no side effects or anything.

To inject a little humor here:

Hee hee my word verification is "baggapo"....what exactly is a "po" and how does one "bag" one? Hmmm...

Ambien sounds like hell.
Interesting that Tiger woods has been on ambien. That could explain his car accident. Then again, doesn't ambien cause impotency problems? It's a puzzle that is for sure.
