After two years of playing games on the iPhone and iPad – among other touchscreen devices – I no longer fuss over virtual controls. But I know I’m in the minority to a degree, as many newcomers to iOS gaming (and veterans even) struggle with the lack of tactile feedback when controlling games via virtual sticks and buttons. And so I was mighty eager to try out Ten One Design’s Fling iPad game controller, a plastic nub that adheres to the tablet screen and provides an analog-esque stick.

I wasn’t necessarily skeptical of the Fling stick, but I am certainly surprised by just how well it works. The elegant little piece of plastic adheres to the Ipad Screen via a pair of suction cups. All you need to do is position the physical stick over the virtual controls and firmly press down. The conductive material beneath the stick relays your thumb movements with impressive accuracy. The clear plastic housing that holds the stick lets you see through to the screen, minimizing the amount of real estate blockage.

The plastic that circles the stick is not there just to look cool – although it does. The curlicue offers both a great field of motion and smooth movement. Plus, when you release the stick, it quickly, well, flings back into the central position. This was especially useful in games like Dead Space and N.O.V.A., where you sometimes need to release the stick to perform an on-screen input. With a good, anchored position for the Fling stick, there’s no more feeling around for the virtual controller, which I consider a legit gripe.

In all, it’s a smart design. And as an added benefit, you need no extra software. You just push it into place on the screen and you’re ready to go. The Fling is ultra-light, too, so throwing one in your backpack (it comes with a nice protective bag) is convenient. But it’s far too large to use on an iPhone, so don’t bother.
